Biography of Krishna
Lord Krishna is a major Hindu deity and one of the most popular Indian divinities. He is worshipped as the eighth avatar of Vishnu, the Hindu god, and as a supreme god in his own right. Krishna is the god of love, compassion, tenderness, and protection. Hindus often consider him a warrior, hero, teacher, philosopher, and great leader.
Krishna's life is depicted in mythology and Hindu scripture:
- Krishna was born in Braj and spent his youth in Vrindavan, where he was a cowherd and young lover. He played music, and the Gopis, or milkmaids, would surround him while singing and dancing. He fell in love with one of the Gopis, Radha.
- Krishna disguised himself as a charioteer and fought in the Mahabharata war alongside Prince Arjuna. During the war, Arjuna and Krishna had a long discussion about dharma, or the appropriate duty of an individual, which is recorded in the Bhagavad Gita. Krishna also defeated King Kansa, who had imprisoned his mother, Devāki, and her consort Vasudevā.
Krishna is believed to have possessed 16 divine qualities, or kalas, including compassion, patience, forgiveness, justice, and impartiality.
